BRAKES - PARKING BRAKE CABLE REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION

  1. Remove the hairpin clip and clevis pin securing the cable pulley to the control handle assembly and remove the pulley.
  2. Disengage the locking pawl and slide the control rod forward. Remove the cable ball from the slot in the control rod.
  3. Remove the hairpin retainer from the dash panel bracket and disengage the cable from its bracket.
  4. Pull the cable and insulator tube down through the hole in the dash panel. Remove the insulator tube from the cable.
  5. Raise the car on a hoist. If a hoist is not available, a floor jack may be used, but jack stands must be placed beneath the lower control arms and rear axle housing.
  6. Remove the retaining screw and clip from the cable on the chassis side rail.
  7. Disengage the cable stepped rod from the equalizer lever.
  8. Remove the hairpin retainer from the cable housing at the crossmember.
  9. Pull the cable forward through the crossmember and remove it from the car.
  10. To install, pass the stepped rod rearward through the crossmember and connect it into the equalizer lever.
  11. Install the hairpin retainer on the cable housing at the crossmember.
  12. Install the cable housing retainer clip on the cable and install the retainer screw on the chassis side rail.
  13. Install the insulator tube onto the upper end of the cable, and push the cable and insulator up through the hole in the dash panel.
  14. Engage the upper end of the cable housing in the dash panel bracket, and install the hairpin retainer.
  15. Connect the cable ball to the control rod.
  16. Assemble the pulley to the control assembly and install the clevis pin and hairpin retainer.
  17. Lower the car. Check the operation of the parking brake. Adjust as necessary as outlined under "Parking Brake Adjustment."
